Humans were already in Eurasia before the "anatomically modern" people began to expand their numbers out of Africa. The "anatomically archaic" humans in Europe, popularly known as Neanderthals, were already using fires to produce systems of ecological "patch dynamics" - mosaics of climax forest interspersed among patches at various stages of secondary growth. Using fire in this way was not just ecological engineering for higher species diversity, it probably began as a way of controlling the spread of dangerous wildfires.
